2024 Pacific Islands GIS & Remote Sensing Users Conference

The Pacific GIS and Remote Sensing Council is pleased to announce the 2024 User Conference under the theme Sustainable Management for Coastal Areas through Remote Sensing and GIS.

In the context of climate change, the management of coastal areas is a priority of Island Nations. The 2024 Pacific Island GIS and Remote Sensing Users Conference is focused on how our GIS and Remote Sensing Community is taking up this challenge and contributing to the sustainable management of the land-sea interface. Innovative remote sensing approaches and dedicated GIS solutions will be presented to the whole community based on latest research and tangible examples.

2024 Pacific GIS & Remote Sensing User Conference will be held in conjunction with the 2024 Pacific Islands Science, Technology and Resources Network Conference,  18  to 22 November 2024.

About the Conference

Today, the conference is the largest GIS and RS Conference in the Pacific with over 300 attendees from far reaches of the globe. The conference provides the platform where three types of participants meet and interact : very different Pacific Island GIS&RS users from Government administrations, utilities and private companies; scientists from Pacific and outside universities as well as well-known research instituttes, regional organisations and space agencies; companies of the GIS and RS market providing hardware, software, image data and services.

The conference spans four days with over 60 presentations. Day 4 will feature the discussion session and Day 5 is reserved for workshops carried out by various experts in their respective geospatial field. Every evening, participants meets during social functions which give opportunities for the three groups of participants to meet and exchange ideas.

PGRSC History

The Pacific GIS and Remote Sensing Council (PGRSC) was officially launched in March 2018 to organise and run the Pacific GIS&RS Users Conference as an independent body. PGRSC has evolved as a Regional Organisation with Focal Points in nearly all Pacific Island Countries providing country input to the conference. PGRSC also has platforms for information distribution such as the Pacific Islands GIS&RS Newsletter, which has existed for more than 25 years, and the email distribution list, GISPacNet, since 1996. Today PGRSC is the Pacific Regional Member of ISPRS, has a MoU with USP, SIBA/GITA, STAR and IUCN, and is the Copernicus Relay for the Pacific Region.
