Disaster and Climate Resilience: The Value of Open Geospatial Standards

Across Pacific Island countries, tropical cyclones, flooding, coastal hazards and rising sea levels highlight the importance of reliable information for disaster preparedness and climate adaptation. Turning scientific data into information that local agencies and communities can use is an important part of addressing these challenges.
Please join Harsha Madiraju, Associate Director – Member Services & Development, of the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) on Thursday, October 29, 2026 at 3:30 p.m. (Fiji time) as he introduces OGC’s work through its Climate and Disaster Resilience Pilot (CDRP) initiatives. These initiatives explore how geospatial technologies and open standards can help bridge the gap between scientific data and practical decision-making.
Participants will learn how open geospatial standards can make information easier to access, share and combine across different systems, supporting coordination between researchers, government agencies and disaster management practitioners. The session will explore the relevance of these approaches to the Pacific, including opportunities to support disaster preparedness, response and longer-term climate adaptation.
